Lefkada
is a beautiful island known for its incredible beaches. The island
has much to offer in terms of excursions. This is not the list with
all the Lefkada excursions but just the most popular ones.
- Lefkada Town: The town of Lefkada is situated in
the north-eastern part of the island and has a population of approximately
8.000 inhabitants. The town was devastated by earthquakes in 1948
and in 1953.
Only a few buildings of the old times are still standing today. After
those earthquakes, the town was rebuilt in a unique architecture.
The houses were built with wooden skeleton and coloured sheet of metal,
in order to withstand the future earthquakes
This unique kind of construction makes the town very attractive. As
the buildings are situated the one next to the other in narrow pedestrian
alleys, they town offers pleasant walks.
- The church of Panagia Hodeghetria: It is one of
the oldest Byzantine churches in Lefkada. It is situated 2 km south
of Lefkada town, near the village of Apolpaina.
The church is dated to the 15th century and it is said that the sister
of John VIII Paleologos lived there.
It is a beautiful church with interesting interior frescoes.
- The village
of Karia: It is a mountainous village situated 14 km southwest
of Lefkada town.
The village is located in an area abundant in water and trees and
it is one of the few places on the island were tradition and customs
are still fully respected. The village is known for the fine embroidered
work.
- The beach of Porto Katsiki: It situated 40 km southwest
from Lefkada town and it is considered as the most beautiful beach
of the island. It is a long sandy beach surrounded by impressive vertical
cliffs.
- The beach of Kathisma: It situated 14 km east of
the island’s capital. It is one of the most beautiful beaches of the
island and looks as if the blue colour of the sea was mixed with bleaching
water. It is a long golden sandy beach surrounded by impressive cliffs.
-The beach of Agios Ioannis Frini: It is situated
just a couple of kilometres of the island’s capital.
It is one of the most beautiful beaches of the island.
In the days without wind, the beach has colours that remind a Caribean
landscape. The area is windy and attracts many windsurfers and kitesurfers.
